What a gummy smile is

A gummy smile is a smile in which a prominent part of the gums shows above the teeth. The cause can be increased activity of the upper-lip muscles or the shape of the gums and teeth, and the method is chosen according to the cause. The procedure is short and is planned individually.

A smile you enjoy, without holding back.

For many people a gummy smile is not just an aesthetic detail, but a reason to smile cautiously or cover their mouth. When less gum shows as you smile, the smile looks more harmonious and you feel freer.

That is why we first assess the cause and together choose the method that suits you. The result differs from person to person, and we talk through everything you can expect in advance.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to what you ask most often

The answers are general in nature and do not replace a check-up. For advice tailored to you, get in touch with the clinic.

What causes a gummy smile?

Most often increased activity of the upper-lip muscles, but also the shape or length of the teeth, excess gum tissue or the development of the jaw. The cause determines which method is right.

How is a gummy smile treated?

With a Botox treatment, which relaxes the muscles that lift the upper lip, or surgically, by reshaping the gums. The choice depends on the cause. The procedure is usually short, often taking less than 20 minutes.

How long does the result last?

Botox is temporary, usually a few months, so it is repeated as needed. Surgical correction of the gums is more lasting, but it does not solve the problem if the cause is the mobility of the lip.

Is the treatment painful?

Botox is given with fine needles, so the discomfort is mild. The surgical procedure is done under local anaesthesia, with possible tenderness during healing.

When will I see the result?

With Botox gradually, after a few days to about two weeks. After surgery the final look is assessed once the gums have healed.

Is everyone suitable for treatment?

No. The cause is determined first, along with whether Botox or surgery is the right option, and some cases need to be handled differently. We assess this at the check-up.
